Forestry

One of the biggest culprits in climate change is deforestation. Approximately 20 percent of greenhouse gas emissions result from the clearing and burning of forests in order to obtain wood for garden furniture and home flooring.

JYSK is one of Europe's largest retailers of garden furniture, we are particularly obliged to work actively to fight illegal 'slash and burn' forestry. This is why JYSK is a member and co-founder of The Forest Trust (TFT), which was founded in 1999. TFT works to create more sustainable forestry and today has more than 80 members worldwide. Through its membership, we at JYSK are committed to increase the percentage of FSC-certified furniture in our product range, which is a commitment we have fulfilled.

FSCTM-certified garden furniture
The Forest Stewardship CouncilTM (FSC) is an internationally recognised, non-profit organisation. In FSC forests, no more trees are cut down than the forest can naturally replace, which helps prevent over-exploitation. At the same time, animals and plant life are protected and the people who work in the forest are provided with training, safety equipment and a decent wage.

Today around 80 percent of all wood used in JYSK's garden furniture is FSC-certified. The remaining 20 percent consists of teak furniture, but as there are limited amounts of suitable FSC teak worldwide, prices and quality fluctuate greatly. However, TFT is working to increase the number of plantations with FSC-certified teak.

The Climate Tree
JYSK helped to develop The Climate Tree through TFT. The Climate Tree is a model that companies can use to become involved in rain forest projects. In addition to financing part of The Climate Tree, JYSK also provides support to a project in Brazil, which will protect one million square metres of rain forest.

'Do-it-yourself assembly' furniture is also certified
In 2009, JYSK began the process of eco-labelling our indoor furniture range - the so-called 'self-assembly' pieces. This is an ongoing process and today 25 percent of the total range is PEFC-certified. PEFC stands for Programme of the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes which is an organisation that works to promote sustainable forestry. The system requires wood to be legally obtained and traceable back to the forest from which it was harvested. PEFC was founded in 1999.
