Forestry

One of the biggest culprits in climate change is deforestation. Approximately 20 percent of greenhouse gas emissions result from the clearing and burning of forests.

Garden furniture is one of JYSK’s core business areas, and we are among Europe's largest retailers of garden furniture. We are therefore working actively to fight unsustainable and illegal 'slash and burn' forestry. This is why JYSK is a member of Forest Stewardship Council™ (FSC) and The Forest Trust (TFT). JYSK co-founded TFT in 1999, and today the organization has more than 80 members worldwide and works to create more sustainable forestry. Through its membership, JYSK is committed to increase the percentage of FSC-certified garden furniture in our product range.

FSC-certified garden furniture
FSC™, Forest Stewardship Council is an internationally recognised, non-profit organisation that fights to promote sustainable forestry. In FSC forests, no more trees are cut down than the forest can naturally replace, which helps prevent over-exploitation. Beyond its commitment to environmentally sustainable forestry, FSC also works to ensure socially and financially sound practices. Social responsibility includes, among other things, the FSC protects native people and local inhabitants who lives in the forests. At the same time the people who work in the forests are provided with training, safety equipment and decent wages. Financial responsibility, on the other hand, entails ensuring that the owners of FSC-certified forests receive decent prices for their wood.

By purchasing FSC-certified garden furniture you are helping to support responsible forest owners who have chosen to practice sustainable forestry, with respect for people and nature.

Today, the majority of all the wood used in JYSK’s garden furniture is FSC-certified.

The Climate Tree
JYSK helped to develop The Climate Tree through TFT. The Climate Tree is a model that companies can use to become involved in rain forest projects. In addition to financing part of The Climate Tree, JYSK also provides support to a project in Brazil, which will protect one million square metres of rain forest.

'Do-it-yourself assembly' furniture is also certified
In 2009, JYSK began the process of eco-labelling our indoor furniture range - the so-called 'self-assembly' pieces. This is an ongoing process and today 25 percent of the total range is PEFC-certified. PEFC stands for Programme of the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes which is an organisation that works to promote sustainable forestry. The system requires wood to be legally obtained and traceable back to the forest from which it was harvested. PEFC was founded in 1999.
